What Does It Mean to Be Green Business-Certified?
California Green Business Network certification required that we adopt green initiatives to make our communities healthier and more livable while also conserving resources and saving money. The Green Business Network is dedicated to changing America’s business practices to create more sustainable, eco-friendly enterprises. Green businesses are environmentally responsible for operating their facilities and in the way they source, market, or manufacture their products and resources. Green Business Certification means a business has met or exceeded the Green Business Network’s required standards for their industry.
Why Is Sustainability Important in Senior Living Communities?
Sustainable senior living is becoming more than just a buzzword in today’s conscientious climate. Sustainability is about leaving the world a better place for future generations, a concept more seniors stand behind. Eco-friendly senior living communities are on the rise, with participants investigating the usage of solar panels to conduct energy while making investments in more extensive recycling efforts, high-efficiency HVAC systems, low-flow plumbing fixtures, energy-efficient lighting and windows, ENERGY STAR®-certified appliances, and drought-tolerant landscaping. Sustainability is not only good for the environment, it is also beneficial for the community because it reduces waste and improves the overall quality of life of the residents. Residents find green senior living communities more appealing because they also usually promote health and wellness.
What Green Initiatives Have Been Implemented at The Artesian?
The Artesian of Ojai incorporated solar panels as well as stormwater retention and gray water recycling systems into our senior living community design. This allows us to manage water usage better and promote more efficient wastewater management. Our gray water recycling system captures wastewater from showers, sinks, and laundry machines. The water is filtered and passed through ultraviolet light until it emerges clear and odorless. It is then stored in a 1000-gallon tank and used to irrigate the Artesian’s drought-tolerant landscaping. Recycling allows us to cut our water usage by about 30% and gets us closer to achieving our goal of net-zero water usage.
